The U.S. Army is looking for vendors to provide new standard versions of laptop computers, tablets and pocket PCs that are easier to use in combat.
The Army released a RFP Sept. 15, seeking to replace older tactical field notebooks, PDA devices and rugged tablets that are no longer compliant with existing standards.
The new devices will operate on a newly created mobile device operating system, and have application programming interfaces (APIs) to enable common functions.
The military is not seeking a replacement for the industry-standard Windows XP operating system.
The Army also is looking for products that have a more rugged design, longer battery life, an easy-to-use interface and built-in anti-counterfeiting technology.
The RFP also requests that the device have a "ruggedized" design so that it can survive a tumble into a mud puddle, which some tactical field notebooks can't do.
The Army wants a device that can perform well in harsh field conditions and also has three or more hours of battery life when the device is active.
The military is also looking for devices that support communication systems, applications and other functions necessary for troops to stay connected in a remote area.
The Army also is looking for a device that meets the following high-level requirements:
Devices that are less than 10-centimeters thick, weigh less than 2.5 pounds and have a display of at least 7.5 inches.
A device that has ruggedized, protected or waterproof capability.
A device that has an anti-tamper or tamper-resistant capabilities.
Devices that meet or exceed standards for the environment in which it is used, including the ability to withstand humidity, temperature extremes and dust.
