New Zealand's dairy giant Fonterra yesterday proposed new target for milk production by 2030 to help cope with increasing population and to meet the world's demand for food.
The target is 30 million tonnes for the current year, which is 10% more than current demand, and a further 15% increase in the following two years.
Fonterra's director of science and technology, Malcolm Stewart, told a forum in Auckland that the company was determined to increase production to meet the international demand of one billion extra people by 2050.
"We cannot just look at domestic demand, we need to understand what is going to happen internationally," he said.
The company produces around 20 million tonnes of milk per year in New Zealand, and is working on ways to increase its efficiency.
Fonterra is under pressure to increase its milk production because it is cutting the amount of subsidies it gives to farmers and wants its prices to rise.
This is all part of a drive to meet the international demand of one billion more people by 2050.
This week saw the release of a report by the UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) on how to feed the world. It was published in the wake of a recent UN population conference in Cairo, which warned that world food production was unlikely to be able to feed the population in 2050.
"A projected global population of around nine billion people in 2050 will require an increase in the food supply by at least 70 per cent," said the report.
According to the FAO, there is just enough food for the world's population now, but the FAO expects ac619d1d87
